When you send patient records, clinical documents, or medical imaging to colleagues or partners, knowing whether they actually opened the files matters. WeTransfer logs preview activity and download events on your transfers, giving you a clear, timestamped record tied to each recipient's verified email address.
Keep count of who views your transfer
Healthcare professionals often share time-sensitive materials, from imaging reports to care coordination documents, where confirming receipt is just as important as the delivery itself. WeTransfer separates preview activity from full downloads in your Transfers panel, so you can tell whether a recipient has looked at a file in the browser or pulled it to their device. Enabling download tracking links every access event to a verified email address, giving you a named record without any follow-up messages. For materials intended for a specific group, such as a referral network or a review committee, you can lock the transfer to a defined list of email addresses so it stays out of reach for anyone not on it. Files arrive exactly as you uploaded them, with no changes to resolution, formatting, or file structure.
Our features are designed to minimize how much of your data we — or anyone else — can access, so you can keep what's yours, yours.

All your questions answered.
Yes. WeTransfer records preview activity and download events as separate entries in your Transfers panel, so you can tell the difference between someone who opened a file in the browser and someone who saved it to their device. For clinical or administrative documents shared with a specific recipient, this distinction helps you understand where they are in the review process without sending a follow-up message.
Before clicking Transfer, look for the Access Control options in the transfer settings panel and enable Tracked downloads. From that point on, anyone who accesses the transfer will need to verify their email address first, and you will receive a notification each time someone downloads, with their email address and a timestamp logged in the transfer's activity record. This applies to all file types, including PDFs, DICOM exports, and Office documents.
Yes. Using the Restricted downloads option in Access Control, you can provide a list of approved email addresses before sending. Anyone who opens the link will need to verify their email, and access is only granted if their address matches your list. This is useful when sharing referral documentation, lab results, or internal reports with a defined group of colleagues or partners.
Yes. When Tracked or Restricted downloads are enabled, the activity log in your transfer details shows each access event individually, with the recipient's name, verified email address, and the exact time of download. For an email transfer, a checkmark also appears next to each recipient's address in your Transfers panel once they have downloaded, so you can see at a glance who has and has not accessed the files.
