See exactly who's opened your shared spreadsheets

Sending a financial model or data export to a client and hearing nothing back is frustrating. WeTransfer lets you track who previewed or downloaded your spreadsheet, tied to a verified email address, so you always know whether the figures have been reviewed before you pick up the phone.

Keep count of who views your transfer

Finance and banking professionals routinely share spreadsheets carrying sensitive data, from portfolio summaries to loan models, and visibility into who actually opens them matters. WeTransfer lets recipients view supported spreadsheet formats directly in the browser before downloading, and that preview activity appears in your Transfers panel as a separate engagement signal alongside any download events. Turning on download tracking means every access is tied to a verified email address, giving you a named, timestamped record for each person who interacts with your transfer. If your spreadsheet is going to a specific counterpart or client team, you can limit access to a defined list of email addresses, blocking anyone outside it automatically. Your files arrive exactly as you uploaded them, with no changes to formatting, formulas, or data.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Yes. When recipients open your transfer link, they can view compatible spreadsheet formats in the browser before deciding to download. That preview activity is recorded in your Transfers panel as its own event, separate from a full download, so you can see engagement even if the client never saves the file locally. This is useful for knowing whether a model or report has been looked at before a scheduled call.

Before clicking Transfer, open the access settings in the transfer window and enable Tracked downloads. From that point, anyone who opens your link has to verify their email address first, and each access event is logged with their name, email, and a timestamp in your transfer details. You can also switch to Restricted downloads if you want to go further and limit access to a specific list of email addresses, which is common when sending to a named client or counterpart in a deal process.

Tracked downloads let anyone with the link open the transfer after verifying their email, and you receive a detailed notification each time someone does. Restricted downloads go a step further: only the email addresses on your access list can open the transfer at all, and anyone else who clicks the link is blocked. For a spreadsheet going to a single institution or a closed group of counterparts, Restricted downloads give you the tighter control that sensitive financial data typically requires.

Yes. With an email transfer you can send to multiple recipients, and download tracking logs each access event individually, tied to the email address that verified and opened the transfer. This means you can see, for example, that one analyst downloaded the file on Monday and a second reviewer opened it on Wednesday, all from the same transfer record in your Transfers panel.

No. WeTransfer sends files in their original state without any modification, compression, or re-encoding, so the spreadsheet your recipient opens or downloads is byte-for-byte identical to the one you uploaded. Formulas, pivot tables, conditional formatting, and embedded data all stay intact. Recipients can also preview the file in the browser before downloading to confirm they have the right version.
