Track who's viewed your shared course materials

WeTransfer records a preview count on every transfer the moment it goes out. When you need the full picture, turning on access control shows you exactly which students, colleagues, or external reviewers opened your files and when they did it.

Keep count of who views your transfer

Knowing whether your materials have actually been looked at matters in education, whether you're sharing lecture recordings, assignment briefs, research drafts, or presentation slides. WeTransfer logs a running preview count on every transfer by default, giving you a quick read on engagement without any configuration. For more precise insight, enabling access control layers on a per-recipient view log, so you can see which individual opened a file and at what point in time. Recipients can preview video, audio, images, and PDFs straight in the browser before downloading, meaning every preview you track reflects a real interaction with your content. If you also want to know who saved a copy, download tracking is a separate option you can switch on for any transfer.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Yes. Every transfer automatically displays a total preview count in your account, so you know how many times it has been opened. To see which specific student or colleague viewed your files and when, enable access control on that transfer — WeTransfer will then produce a per-recipient log with names and timestamps.

No account is required to view or download a transfer. Students receive a link and can open it directly in their browser, previewing videos, PDFs, images, and audio without signing up for anything. You still see the preview data on your end regardless of whether they have an account.

Recipients can preview PDFs, Office documents (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), MP4 and MOV video files up to 300 MB, MP3 and WAV audio, and a wide range of image formats including JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and HEIC. This covers most common formats used in education, from lecture slides and handouts to recorded lessons.

Yes, these are tracked separately. A view (or preview) means someone opened the transfer and looked at the file in the browser. A download means they saved a copy to their device. Preview counts are always on for every transfer, while download tracking is an optional setting you enable before sending.

Yes. WeTransfer's restricted access setting lets you specify one or more email addresses, and only recipients on that list can open the transfer. This is useful for distributing sensitive materials like exam resources, feedback reports, or confidential research drafts to a defined group of people.
