Sending a proposal or contract and hearing nothing back is frustrating. WeTransfer gives you a clear record of who accessed your document transfer, so you can follow up with confidence rather than guessing whether your files were ever opened.
Keep count of who views your transfer
Document deliveries often land in a quiet inbox, leaving you with no sense of whether the recipient actually looked at what you sent. WeTransfer lets you enable download tracking on any transfer, tying each access event to a verified email address so you have a named, timestamped record of who engaged with your documents. For sensitive materials like contracts, proposals, or briefs, you can restrict access to a specific list of approved email addresses, meaning anyone outside that list cannot reach the files at all. Recipients can open PDFs and Office documents directly in the browser for a preview before downloading, and that preview activity gives you an additional engagement signal on top of the download record. Every document you send arrives exactly as you uploaded it, with no compression or quality changes of any kind.
Our features are designed to minimize how much of your data we — or anyone else — can access, so you can keep what's yours, yours.

In your Transfers panel, every sent transfer shows a downloaded or not yet downloaded status alongside the recipient's email address. For email transfers, a checkmark appears next to each recipient's address once they download, and hovering over it shows the exact date and time. To get a more detailed, named record, you can enable Tracked downloads before sending, which asks anyone opening the link to verify their email first and logs each access event in the transfer's activity view.
Tracked downloads lets anyone with the link access your documents after verifying their email address, and you receive a notification with their name and a timestamp each time someone opens the transfer. Restricted downloads goes further: only the email addresses you specify in your access list can ever reach the files, so the transfer is completely closed to anyone not on that list. Both options are set before sending in the transfer options panel and can be adjusted afterwards from the transfer details page.
Yes. PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoint files, and Excel spreadsheets can all be previewed directly in the browser before the recipient decides to download anything. Preview activity appears alongside download events in your Transfers panel, giving you an engagement signal even from recipients who browse the content without saving a copy. Recipients can also leave comments on individual files during a preview, which gives you another concrete indicator of engagement.
Yes. When setting up your transfer, enable Restricted downloads and add the email addresses of the people you want to allow. When anyone opens the link, they are asked to verify their email, and access is only granted if their address matches your approved list. You can edit that access list after sending from the transfer details page on the web, and changes take effect immediately.
You need a free WeTransfer account to send any transfer, which also gives you access to basic download status in your Transfers panel. The more detailed options, Tracked downloads and Restricted downloads with per-recipient activity logs, are available across paid plans. Recipients never need an account to open or preview the documents you send them.
