Sending spreadsheets, reports, or data packages to clients and colleagues only gets you so far without knowing who has actually looked at them. WeTransfer gives you a clear record of preview and download activity for every transfer, so you can act on real engagement rather than assumptions.
Keep count of who views your transfer
When data files change hands, knowing whether the right person has opened your report, reviewed your dataset, or downloaded your analysis package matters as much as sending it in the first place. WeTransfer separates in-browser preview activity from full downloads in your Transfers panel, giving you two distinct signals per transfer and per recipient. Enable download tracking before you send and each access event is tied to a verified email address and an exact timestamp, so you have a concrete record to reference before a client call or internal review. For sensitive materials such as financial models, proprietary datasets, or confidential business reports, you can restrict access to a named list of email addresses so only the intended recipients can reach the files. Your data files are delivered exactly as uploaded, with no compression or alteration, whether you are sending CSVs, Excel workbooks, PDFs, or large ZIP archives.
Our features are designed to minimize how much of your data we — or anyone else — can access, so you can keep what's yours, yours.

All your questions answered.
Yes. WeTransfer records preview activity and download events as separate signals in your Transfers panel, so you can tell whether someone opened your spreadsheet or PDF in the browser or saved the file to their device. Each event is tied to a verified email address and a precise timestamp. This distinction is especially useful when sharing data packages or reports where you want to know not just that someone clicked the link, but whether they engaged deeply enough to download the full file.
Before clicking Transfer, open the transfer settings panel and enable download tracking. Once active, every access event for that transfer is logged with the recipient's verified email address and the exact date and time. You can review this activity at any time from your Transfers panel by clicking into the transfer details. The setting must be enabled before sending, so it is worth making it part of your routine when sharing any data file where recipient engagement matters.
Yes. The restricted access option lets you specify a list of email addresses before sending. When someone opens the transfer link, they must verify their email address, and access is only granted if they appear on your list. This means even if the link is forwarded or shared unintentionally, the file stays within the audience you defined. You can also update the access list after sending from the transfer details page in the web version.
Yes. When you send an email transfer to multiple recipients, download tracking records each person's activity individually so you can see exactly which stakeholder downloaded your file and when. For link transfers, enabling tracked downloads requires recipients to verify their email address before accessing the files, which ties each access event to a named person rather than an anonymous click. Either way, you get a per-recipient view rather than an aggregate count.
No. Recipients can open, preview, and download your transfers without creating a WeTransfer account. For data file types such as PDFs, spreadsheets, and CSVs, supported formats can be previewed directly in the browser before downloading, so a recipient can review a report without committing to a full download. If you have restricted access enabled, they will need to verify their email address to confirm they are on your access list, but that does not require an account.
