Transfer expiration is in your hands

When you're handing off video footage, rough cuts, or finished edits, the shelf life of that link matters. WeTransfer lets you attach an expiry to any video transfer so access ends on your terms, not on a default timer you never chose. Your videos travel without compression or re-encoding, so 4K footage, RAW exports, and high-bitrate files arrive exactly as you packaged them. Before downloading, recipients can play back videos directly in their browser, letting them confirm they have the right cut without saving anything locally. For sensitive handoffs, pair your expiry with password protection or restrict the link to specific email addresses so only the right people can reach the files while they're live.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Yes. Before sending, you can set the exact expiry from the transfer options panel. On a free account, links stay active for up to 3 days. On Ultimate and above, you can pick any date you like, set a custom duration, or keep the transfer available indefinitely with no fixed deadline.

No. WeTransfer sends your video files exactly as you uploaded them, with no re-encoding, no resolution loss, and no quality changes. 4K footage, high-bitrate exports, and large video files all arrive on the recipient's end in the same condition they left yours.

Yes. Recipients can preview MP4 and MOV files directly in their browser before downloading, so they can check they have the right version or cut without pulling down the full file. Previews are available on web, iOS, and Android, and no WeTransfer account is needed to view them.

Yes. Go to your Transfers panel, open the transfer, and update the expiration date from there. The change takes effect immediately. Just let your recipient know directly if the window has shifted, since they won't receive an automatic notification about the update.

Once a transfer expires, the download link stops working and the files are permanently removed from WeTransfer's servers. On Ultimate, Teams, and Enterprise plans, you can recover expired transfers within a recovery window, which is useful if you need to revive a handoff after the deadline has passed. Free and Starter users cannot recover expired transfers.
