Set an expiry date on your shared media file links

In news and media, files move fast and access windows matter. WeTransfer lets you build a deadline into every transfer from the moment you send it, so raw footage, press assets, and broadcast files stop being reachable the instant your embargo lifts or your deadline passes.

Transfer expiration is in your hands

Journalists, editors, and producers routinely share files on tight schedules where an open link past its window creates real problems. WeTransfer lets you attach a closing date to any transfer at the point of sending, and the download link goes dark automatically when that moment arrives. Video rushes, audio packages, high-resolution photography, and editorial PDFs all travel without any compression or re-encoding, so recipients get exactly what was captured or edited, whether that is 4K footage or a layered graphic. You can stack additional controls on top of expiry, such as a password for embargoed material or a restricted access list tied to verified email addresses, giving you confidence that pre-publication assets only reach the people they should. Recipients can also preview supported file formats directly in the browser before downloading, which keeps fast-moving editorial and production workflows moving without unnecessary back-and-forth.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

When uploading, open the transfer options and select your expiry date before clicking send. Free and Starter accounts cap transfers at 3 days, while Ultimate and above let you pick any end date or leave the link open indefinitely. For time-sensitive media handoffs, such as footage delivered ahead of an air date, you can set the link to expire the moment your exclusivity window closes. The link deactivates automatically with no manual follow-up needed from you.

Yes. Go to your Transfers panel, open the transfer, and update the expiration date from the settings there. The change takes effect immediately, so if a deadline shifts or a broadcast slot moves, you can extend or shorten access without resending the files. Just let your recipient know directly, since WeTransfer does not automatically notify them of the change.

Beyond setting an expiry date, you can lock any transfer behind a password so only recipients who know it can access the files. You can also restrict access to a specific list of verified email addresses, which is useful when distributing embargoed photography or pre-release footage to a named press list. Enabling download tracking lets you see exactly who accessed a file and when, giving you a clear record for editorial or rights purposes.

No account is required to download or preview a transfer. Recipients click the link or open the email notification and access the files straight away, which removes any friction when sending to freelancers, wire desks, or broadcast partners on deadline. Sending files does require a free WeTransfer account, but the people receiving your work have nothing to sign up for.

On Ultimate, Teams, and Enterprise plans, expired transfers can be recovered even after the link has gone dark, and this applies retroactively to transfers that expired before you upgraded. Recovery windows depend on file size, so it is worth checking the specifics for your files. Free and Starter accounts cannot recover expired transfers, so if missed downloads are a risk in your workflow, upgrading to Ultimate is the most direct fix.
