In healthcare, files shared past their intended window can create real risk. WeTransfer lets you build a precise access deadline into every transfer before you send it, so patient records, referral documents, clinical images, and administrative files become inaccessible automatically when the window closes.
Transfer expiration is in your hands
Healthcare teams routinely share time-sensitive files where controlling access duration is a compliance necessity. WeTransfer lets you attach an expiry date to any transfer at the point of sending, and the link deactivates on its own when that date arrives, with no manual action required from you. Every file travels without compression or re-encoding, so DICOM exports, PDF reports, scanned consent forms, and ZIP archives of case documentation arrive exactly as they were prepared. On top of expiry, you can require a password to open a transfer or restrict access to a specific list of verified email addresses, giving you layered control over who can reach sensitive materials while the link is still active. WeTransfer is EU-based, GDPR-compliant, and encrypts every file both in transit and at rest, making it a practical fit for healthcare organisations that need demonstrable data handling standards without heavy infrastructure overhead.

Before clicking send, open the transfer options and choose an expiry date from the expiry control. The link will stop working automatically at the end of that day, with no need to manually revoke access afterward. On a free account, links expire after a maximum of three days. With a WeTransfer Ultimate plan or above, you can set any custom window you need, from a single day to an indefinite period, which is useful for longer referral or review cycles.
Yes. Go to your Transfers panel, open the transfer, and update the expiry date from the transfer details page. The change takes effect immediately, so if a recipient needs more time to access a radiology export or discharge summary, you can extend the window without re-uploading anything. If you shorten the window, the link deactivates on the new date.
You can add a password to any transfer so only recipients who know it can open the link, and you can restrict access to a specific list of verified email addresses so the files are reachable only by named individuals. Both controls work on all plans and can be combined with a custom expiry date for layered protection. This is particularly useful when sending to an external provider, a named consultant, or a specific procurement panel where you need to confirm exactly who accessed the files.
WeTransfer encrypts all files in transit using TLS and at rest using AES-256, stores data on EU servers in Ireland, and is ISO 27001 certified and GDPR-compliant. Data Processing Agreements are available for paid plan customers, which supports the formal vendor agreements many healthcare organisations require. Files are never used to train AI, never shared with third parties, and staff do not view your content. Note that for regulated clinical data such as identifiable patient records, you should verify with your organisation's data protection officer that WeTransfer meets your specific local requirements.
No. Recipients can open a transfer link, preview supported file types directly in the browser, and download files without creating a WeTransfer account. This removes friction when sending to external GPs, specialist consultants, or partner organisations who may not use WeTransfer themselves. If you have restricted access enabled, recipients will need to verify their email address to confirm they are on the access list before the files become available.
