Public sector and NGO work often involves sensitive handoffs with firm deadlines. WeTransfer lets you decide exactly when a shared link stops working, so briefing documents, grant applications, funding reports, and policy files go offline the moment the access window closes, automatically.
Transfer expiration is in your hands
Government organisations and NGOs frequently share time-sensitive materials where overstaying access is a compliance risk, not just an inconvenience. WeTransfer lets you build a closing date into every transfer at the point of sending, so links deactivate on their own when the submission period, consultation window, or review cycle ends. Every file arrives exactly as it was prepared, with no compression applied, whether that means policy PDFs, budget spreadsheets, scanned forms, or large ZIP archives of supporting documentation. You can layer additional controls on top of expiry, such as locking a transfer behind a password or limiting access to a named list of verified email addresses, which is particularly useful when distributing to a specific procurement panel or partner organisation. WeTransfer is EU-based, GDPR-compliant, and encrypts files both in transit and at rest, giving public sector teams and NGOs a clear audit trail without the overhead of complex infrastructure.

All your questions answered.
When you upload files on WeTransfer, you can set the expiry before clicking send. Free accounts allow a maximum of three days before the link deactivates, while Ultimate and above let you choose any duration or keep the transfer available indefinitely. Once the deadline passes, the link closes automatically and the files are removed from WeTransfer's servers, with no manual intervention needed from you or your IT team.
Yes. From your Transfers panel, open the relevant transfer and adjust the expiration date using the calendar picker. The change takes effect immediately, so if a consultation window is extended or a funding deadline shifts, you can reflect that in your shared link without resending anything. It is worth notifying recipients directly if the deadline changes, as WeTransfer does not send them an automatic update.
You can combine expiry with password protection, so only recipients who hold the password can open the transfer while it is active. You can also enable Restricted Access to limit downloads to a specific list of verified email addresses, which is useful when distributing procurement documents to a named evaluation committee or sharing grant materials with a defined group of partner NGOs. Both controls are available on all plans.
WeTransfer is based in the EU, fully GDPR-compliant, and ISO 27001 certified. Files are encrypted in transit using TLS and at rest using AES-256, stored on AWS servers in Ireland. Data Processing Agreements are available for business plans, making it straightforward for public sector bodies and NGOs to meet their data governance obligations when using WeTransfer for official handoffs.
No account is required to download or preview a transfer. Recipients simply open the link, and if the transfer is still within its active window, they can access the files immediately. This removes the friction of account creation for colleagues in other agencies, partner NGOs, or funding bodies who only need to retrieve documents once.
