Some documents need a short window; others need to stay up until the project wraps. Set how long your shared link works before you send, and adjust it anytime from your Transfers panel without re-uploading.
Transfer expiration is in your hands
When you share contracts, briefs, or reports, controlling access after delivery matters just as much as getting the files there. WeTransfer lets you attach an expiry date to any document transfer so the download link closes when you want it to, not on a fixed platform timer. Sensitive documents can be paired with password protection or restricted access, limiting who can open the link in the first place. Recipients can preview PDFs and Office documents in-browser before downloading, so they can check they have the right version without pulling the whole file. Your documents arrive exactly as you uploaded them, no compression, no formatting changes.
Our features are designed to minimize how much of your data we — or anyone else — can access, so you can keep what's yours, yours.

All your questions answered.
On a free WeTransfer account, transfers are available for up to 3 days from the moment they are sent. That covers most quick turnarounds, like sending a contract for same-day review or sharing a brief before a meeting. If you need a longer or more flexible window, upgrading to Ultimate lets you set any custom duration or keep the transfer available indefinitely.
Yes, on Ultimate and above you can remove the expiry entirely so the download link stays live until you choose to delete the transfer. This is useful for documents that need to stay permanently accessible, like reference materials, onboarding guides, or signed agreements. Free and Starter accounts are capped at a 3-day maximum and cannot remove the expiry.
Yes. On top of expiry control, you can add a password so only recipients who know it can access the files, or enable restricted access to lock the transfer to specific email addresses. These controls work independently or together, so you can set a document to expire on a given date and limit it to a named list of recipients at the same time. Both options are available on all plans.
Once a transfer expires, the download link stops working and the files are permanently removed from WeTransfer's servers. If you are on Ultimate and had the Recoverable option enabled, you can restore the transfer from your Transfers panel within the recovery window. Free and Starter users cannot recover expired transfers, so if you think you may need the files again later it is worth keeping a local copy.
Yes. PDFs, Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, Excel spreadsheets, and several other document formats can be previewed in-browser without any download. Recipients can also leave comments on individual files and mark favorites, which is handy for document review cycles where you want feedback before the link closes. No WeTransfer account is needed to preview or comment.
