Share data files that expire on your schedule

Upload your data files, set when access should close, and share the link. The transfer goes dark at the right moment without any follow-up from you, so sensitive information doesn't stay available longer than it needs to.

Transfer expiration is in your hands

When data files contain anything time-sensitive, whether that's raw exports, survey results, database dumps, or research sets, you want the people receiving them to have access for exactly the right window and no longer. WeTransfer lets you attach an expiry to any transfer before you send it, so the link closes automatically when your window ends. You can stack additional controls on top: a password to limit who can open the transfer, or a restricted access list so only specific email addresses can get through. Recipients can preview supported file types directly in their browser before downloading, which makes it easy to confirm they have the right version without pulling a local copy they may not need. Your data files are delivered exactly as uploaded, with no alterations to the content or structure.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

Before uploading, open the transfer options and choose your expiry window from the settings panel. On Free and Starter accounts, links stay active for up to 3 days. On Ultimate and above, you can set any duration you need, or keep the transfer available indefinitely until you choose to remove it.

Yes. Go to your Transfers panel, open the transfer details, and update the expiration date using the calendar picker. The change takes effect immediately, so you can shorten or extend the window at any point while the transfer is still active. Just let your recipients know directly, since they won't receive an automatic notification.

Once a transfer expires, the download link stops working and the files are permanently deleted from WeTransfer's servers. On Ultimate, Teams, and Enterprise plans, transfers with the Recoverable option enabled can be retrieved within a set window after expiry, useful if you need to restore a dataset you thought was finished with.

Yes. You can add a password to any transfer so only recipients who have it can open the link. For tighter control, use restricted access to lock the transfer to a specific list of email addresses, meaning anyone not on the list is turned away even if they have the link. Both options are available on all plans.

WeTransfer handles any file type, including CSVs, JSON exports, XML files, database dumps, Excel workbooks, and compressed archives like ZIP or TAR. Files are transferred without any changes to their content, encoding, or structure, so the recipient gets exactly what you uploaded.
