Share sensitive documents that close on your timeline

When you send deliverables to a client or hand off audit files to a colleague, the window for access should end when the engagement ends. Set exactly when a transfer link expires, and it closes automatically, no manual cleanup required.

Transfer expiration is in your hands

Consulting and audit work runs on defined timelines, and the documents you share — engagement letters, financial statements, working papers, compliance reports — should stop being accessible the moment the relevant phase wraps up. WeTransfer lets you define when a transfer link closes at the point of sending, so access ends automatically without you needing to circle back and revoke anything. Every file is delivered in its original state, with no compression applied, meaning PDFs, spreadsheets, and Office documents arrive exactly as you prepared them. For handoffs that call for an additional layer of control, you can pair a time-limited link with password protection or restrict access to a named list of email addresses, so only the intended recipients can open the files while the transfer is still active. Recipients can preview compatible document formats directly in the browser before downloading, making it straightforward for auditors or clients to confirm they have the right version without committing to a local save.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

When you upload files on WeTransfer, you'll see an expiry option in the transfer settings before you hit send. Free and Starter accounts cap transfers at a maximum of 3 days, while Ultimate and above let you choose any custom duration or keep the transfer open indefinitely. You can also update the expiry on an active transfer at any time from your Transfers panel, which is useful if a project timeline shifts or a client needs a short extension.

Yes. When creating a transfer, you can enable restricted access and supply a list of email addresses. Only recipients whose addresses match that list can open the files, even if someone else gets hold of the link. This pairs well with an expiry date for handoffs where both who sees the documents and for how long are equally important, such as sharing interim audit findings with a named review team.

Once a transfer expires, the download link stops working immediately and the files are removed from WeTransfer's servers. The access point closes on its own, so there's nothing further to action on your end. On Ultimate and above, if you need to recover a transfer that has already expired, there is a recovery option available from your Transfers panel, which can be useful if a client requests re-access after the original window has closed.

No account is needed to download a transfer. Recipients at a client firm or audit counterparty simply open the link and download, without signing up for anything. The sender does need a WeTransfer account to create and manage transfers, including setting expiry dates, passwords, and access restrictions.

Password protection is available on all WeTransfer plans and works alongside expiry controls. You set a password before sending, and recipients must enter it before they can access the files. The password is not included in the transfer notification email, so you share it with the intended recipient through a separate channel, which keeps credentials and file access independent. This combination of a closing deadline and a password gives you two distinct checkpoints on sensitive deliverables.
