WeTransfer vs Google Drive: different tools, different jobs

Some files need to move fast, arrive intact, and land cleanly for someone who has never heard of your software stack. WeTransfer is built for exactly that moment: a frictionless send from your browser, a clean download for your recipient, and no account required on their end.

Why choose WeTransfer

If you're weighing WeTransfer against a cloud storage platform, the distinction worth understanding is that WeTransfer is a sending tool, not a storage locker. You add your files, choose how to share them, and the person on the other end gets a clean download page, no sign-up, no app install, nothing to figure out. Files are sent in their original quality, with no re-encoding and no resolution loss, so a 4K video or a high-resolution design file arrives exactly as you produced it. Every transfer gets a unique download link you can drop into any chat, email, or message thread, and you can layer on password protection, per-email access restrictions, or download tracking whenever the work calls for it. WeTransfer also supports upload requests, per-transfer branding, and shared workspaces for teams, so it grows with you as the work gets more complex.

FAQs

All your questions answered.

No account is needed to download or preview a WeTransfer transfer. Recipients click the link or the button in their notification email, and the download starts straight away. They can also preview images, video, audio, and PDFs in the browser before deciding what to download, and leave comments on individual files, all without signing up for anything.

WeTransfer is a sending tool first. You upload files, share a link or send directly to recipients by email, and the transfer goes out immediately. It is not a cloud drive where you organize folders and sync devices, which means the experience is optimized for the act of getting files to someone else, quickly and cleanly, rather than for long-term document management.

WeTransfer does not re-encode, resize, or alter your files at any point. What you upload is exactly what the recipient downloads, whether that is a 4K video, a layered PSD, a CAD drawing, or a folder of raw audio. The only packaging WeTransfer applies is a lossless zip when bundling multiple files for download, which does not affect the files themselves.

Every transfer is encrypted in transit with TLS and at rest with AES-256, and is only reachable via its unique link. On top of that, you can add a password to any transfer on any plan, or restrict access to a specific list of email addresses so only named recipients can download. Download tracking lets you see exactly who downloaded your files and when, and you can delete a transfer at any time, revoking the link immediately.

Yes. WeTransfer supports folder uploads, and recipients download the folder with the same structure you uploaded, including nested subfolders. This is useful for project handoffs, asset deliveries, or any situation where the organisation of the files matters as much as the files themselves.
