LOS ANGELES—March 27, 2022: The Long Goodbye a short film by Aneil Karia and Riz Ahmed commissioned by WePresent, the digital arts platform of WeTransfer, was awarded a 2022 Academy Award®️ for Best Live Action Short Film. The film was created as a wake-up call against rising intolerance and was first released on WePresent in March 2020.

In the film, Riz Ahmed and his family are in the middle of preparing a wedding celebration when the events unfolding in the outside world arrive suddenly on their doorstep. Aneil Karia’s The Long Goodbye takes us on a journey that is both intimate and devastating. The 11-minute short film is a look at what may lie ahead for us in these increasingly intolerant times, and what is unfolding for minorities in many countries around the world.

This short film blazed through the festival circuit taking home two Oscar-qualifying awards, one at the prestigious Hollyshorts in Los Angeles—as well as winning Best Short at the British Independent Film Awards and the Cannes Lions awards. Its impact has reached beyond screens—it was mentioned in British Parliament as “required viewing” shortly after its release.

Prestigious international film festivals the film has been selected for include The London Critics Circle Awards 2021 where it won the Best British/Irish Short Film, Palm Springs International ShortFest, Cannes Lions 2021 where it won a Gold Lion and two Silver Lions and many more. The film also screened at BFI Southbank as part of a season curated by the Tape Collective.

Riz Ahmed, Academy Award-winning British filmmaker and actor said, "Working with WePresent on the The Long Goodbye was a unique collaboration for us, they allowed us full creative freedom and were fearless in their commitment to this project and the artists and director’s vision. This support of creative expression is unparalleled for a brand and vital in the production of meaningful and challenging creative projects."

Damian Bradfield, Chief Creative Officer and Co-Founder at WeTransfer said, “Since 2020 we were guided by the phenomenon of pandemic 'treat-brain' - the comfort-seeking behaviours we need in order to justify our existence. For many, repeat episodes of Friends and Greys Anatomy had presided over true hard-hitting, essential story telling that we need to hear and see. Which was worrying. For The Long Goodbye to be awarded an Academy Award is perhaps a signal to the world that 'treat brain' is over and that we need and are willing once again to return to the topics that matter."

This is WeTransfer’s first ever Academy Award.
